New Brunswick puts aggregate through a brutal annual test. Water seeps into the base, freezes, expands, and pries everything apart, then thaws and does it again. Along the Saint John River valley and down through the Petitcodiac lowlands near Moncton, that cycle can run dozens of times in a single season.
Pavement that lasts here is built to drain and built to move with the ground without breaking up. That comes down to gradation and compaction at the base layer, which is exactly the part most people never see and most corners get cut.
